How to play Rock Paper Scissors on a video call
Send an invite
During a call, open the Games tab and pick the game. Your match gets an invite on their screen.
Pick your move
Choose rock, paper or scissors. Neither of you sees the other's pick until both have chosen.
Reveal
Both picks show at once. Rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, paper beats rock.
First to three
The first player to win three rounds wins the game. Ties don't count.
Rock Paper Scissors rules
Each player secretly chooses rock, paper or scissors, then both reveal at the same time. Rock crushes scissors, scissors cut paper, and paper covers rock. The same choice is a tie and the round is replayed. On Chatingly, the first to win three rounds wins.
How to win more often
If both players picked truly at random, nobody could win more than a third of the time. But people aren't random, and a few patterns show up again and again:
- Winners tend to repeat. A player who just won often plays the same move again, so play what beats it.
- Losers tend to switch. After a loss, people often move to the option that would have beaten them. Play what beats that.
- Rock is a popular first move, especially for players who haven't thought about it. Paper is a decent opener.
- People avoid repeating three times. After two of the same, expect a change.
- Talk. On a video call you can say “I'm going rock” and watch them decide whether to believe you.

Rock Paper Scissors works on any video call: count “rock, paper, scissors, shoot” together and show your hand to the camera on “shoot”. The catch is video lag. One person's hand usually arrives a split second later, which starts arguments about who cheated.
On Chatingly both picks are locked in before they're revealed, so there's no lag and no cheating.

FAQ
Rock Paper Scissors: questions
Is Rock Paper Scissors just luck?
Against a perfectly random player, yes. Against a real person, patterns like “winners repeat, losers switch” give you a small edge, and over a best-of-five that edge matters.
How many rounds is a game on Chatingly?
First to three wins, like a best of five. Tied rounds don't count toward either player.
Can the other player see my choice before revealing?
No. Both choices stay hidden until both of you have picked, then they're shown at the same moment.
